Surfing

I love surfing, but don’t get me wrong, catching waves is not what I am after. Yes, it is fun to ride down, but it's the same type of fun as making zigzags on a bike during my commute home. I think catching a wave is just bait for my brain to be where the waves crash.

I think immersive environments are universally therapeutical. They are taking one away from their default mode network, being eternally stuck in our egotic, repetitive, distortion-producing selfs.

And being where the waves crush is maybe the most immersive environment I know. Sitting on a belly of an ocean, which each breath elevates and lowers one. Siting surrounded by the unstable, unfamiliar, liquid state of matter. Surroundings are in constant change. And change happens in volumes of small buildings. And then being tumbled by the soft yet irresistible and overwhelming force. Being where the waves crush clears, simplifies, untangles my head. After 1.5 hours I don’t care about any petty problems my hunter-gatherer brain was caught up with.

Alex was teaching me surfing. He practically lives from Cocles beach in Costa Rica. It feels that the ocean touched him. He is one of the calmest, yet full-of-energy people I met. I cannot imagine a situation that would disturb him. Alex said that if he could he would prescribe surfing to every criminal, sad, traumatized, addicted, and depressed. Hearing it there and from him feels so obviously correct.

Longer focus

On the longer stretches, you are able to focus the more quality you can extract. Maybe it is like a processor rendering reality and the longer the text you are reading the potentially more RAM your processor operates with, and potentially higher resolution images it can render.

On rereading

Forget the need of trying to find your max of 223 g of new knowledge per 1 minute. Let yourself reread bc the state you are after is your head being electricized. Then electric chain reactions in your head will start: ideas to pop up, synthesis to form, clarity to emerge, the decision to simplify, values to bubble up. You probably already have enough material in you. Running after new material is worth less than it seems.

I entered a kitchen. There was a lot of scattered stuff. I was tired and my head didn't have a lot of clarity. I cooked for about an hour and at the end realized that there were two parrots in cages in this room. I forgot about them. Neglected them. And they were living. Their nervous systems were sending particles of excitement and pain to their minds. It was surprising that I could forget, not notice beings that are in the same room. It was also weirdly thrilled that I could think that the space is empty but actually there were beings in there. It's like discovering spaces that have more spaces within them. Spaces that connect past and present, that have real boundaries, that self-generate excitement and pain. And I had this semi–disconnected thought. If this disproportion already exists, there will be even more situations like this. In the future more situations that normally I would deem as normal, predictable, known but they will hide a few tiny spaces that open unimaginably more spaces within them.

I declare you as a democratic state (looking down on my body)

I believe you are a modularly built brain with independently working circuits. Some of the circuits are tyrants and overtake our decision-making to do things like overeat, go into a negative mood spirals, deprioritize meditation or moving our body. However, it's easy to get access to what our majority want and will benefit from. I, therefore, declare us as a democratic state and will work with all of you to choose actions that foster the common good.

Faith

You say love and friendship are important to you. But you are just another monkey hierarchy climber. You attend church because you think it’s good for the god. But you are just a moving ad for how important herd is to you. (If any of this feels off, run and read "Elephant in the Brain").

Half of your church is rotten. Half of your church is magnificent. The real foundations of faith are 1) Let’s just try, for a second suspend the fact we are egotistical self-obsessions and... 2) have faith in the artificial construction of love and friendship. It's not true but it's a life worth living. It is its only sense. So let’s close our eyes. And let's repeat this until this spirit becomes the body.

Spending money on redundantly expensive things is a form of depression. Many ppl lost connection to the fact that money is time. It often happens with 9 to 5 work. It feels like it doesn't matter how much I spend because I will work till my retirement anyway.

Internet products are a perpetuum mobiles

It's like inventing a perpetual, self-happening loop – a mechanism that will run automatically with relatively little of creator's oversight. Google, Facebook Twitter pay way less for a copy of their products than Coca-Cola, Malboro or Nike. That's one of main reasons why "software is eating the world" and by the end of the 2010s Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook, and Microsoft – were, besides Saudi Aramco, the most valuable public companies globally. Inventing an Internet product is about finding an algorithm that people will find useful. Creators need to just press play. Algorithm will multiply itself in millions and work while they sleep. Let's take Google. The core of the Google's idea is counting links. It's a script that's goes to a website and finds all the links pointing to other websites. Then goes to these other websites and finds all other links. And when you Google something it will serve you a website that received the highest amount of links (given that links from big websites are counted more). This is the core of the Google's idea. There are on average 3.5 billion Google searches every day (2019). Google search is responsible for a vast large majority of Google's and Alphabet's (parent company) profits. Brin and Page invented this algorithm in 1998 and with relatively little oversight (relative to its influence) it just keeps repeating itself in millions.
