2. Language has two function

1) convey content e.g. bribe, command, proposition

2) and negotiate a relationship type: dominance, communality (sharing), reciprocity (business, I do this for that)

what’s appropriate in one type of relationship can put a strain on other type. E.g. don’t do business with friends: negotiating can put a strain on a relationship
