It's helpful to try be less like soldiers. Trying to win arguments.
And to be more like scouts. Trying to explore the territory. Just see what are the options out there. People who are able to change their ideas are this predicts a good judgment.
Problem: By default people are group thinkers. That's why we divide ourselves into different groups when talking about politics, religions, ethics. The clearest manifestation of the mechanics of our thinking is when we cheer sports team. If a referee is calling a foul of our player we are highly motivated to examine all the evidence. If our player is fouled we are much more likely to cheer and not be motivated to look into it. This bias shows up in a lot more ways we think.
